Lessons Learned
Deepak Patil, a vice president working on Oracle's infrastructure as a service (IaaS) offerings, came to Oracle about a year ago from Microsoft, where he helped launch that company's Azure service. The challenge for him—and hundreds of other Oracle engineers like him, many of whom came from Amazon Web Services, Google, Joyent, Microsoft, and other companies—has been to build the second generation of Oracle's cloud platform "by applying all of your lessons, avoiding all the mistakes, and leveraging both the advancements in software and hardware and also some of the unique strategic benefits that only Oracle can offer," Patil says.

Oracle's IaaS is superior, Patil says, because the team has made fundamentally different decisions than its rivals in three critical areas: the architecture, network, and software design of its cloud infrastructure. Learn the details of how those technical decisions drive better performance, predictability, and price.

Five companies—General Electric, General Motors, Australian Red Cross Blood Service, D+M, and UL—show how to make transformation real.
Future of the IT Labor Market: An Optimist's View
Many traditional IT jobs will go away forever once they've been automated by the cloud or otherwise. If you believe in finite demand for enterprise IT services, it looks grim. But Oracle's Chuck Hollis looks at the future another way: if we shift to using IT to create better outcomes rather than making heavy IT investments just to keep the lights on, there should be plenty of satisfying IT career opportunities, although they will look very different from those of decades past. Here's why Hollis calls himself an optimist.
