10 Database Startups Rake In $2.9 Billion in VC Funding
December 17, 2021
Cockroach Labs yesterday joined the list of cloud database startups receiving venture capital in 2021, putting an exclamation point on what has been a busy year of investments in, and development of, these next-generation database platforms.
A few details on Cockroach Labs' announcement:
- $278 million in Series F funding brings total funding to $633 million
- Valuation more than doubled, from $2 billion to $5 billion
- Annual recurring revenue tripled over the past 12 months
- Half of customers now use Cockroach Labs' fully managed cloud service
That's all very impressive. But Cockroach Labs is by no means an outlier—other database startups such as Neo4j, Yugabyte, Redis, and SingleStore are likewise building and expanding with new rounds of funding. In fact, I put together a list of 10 cloud database startups that have pulled in $2.9 billion funding in 2021.
And here's more. I recently wrote about Neo4j's $325 million investment round.
What next in this crazy market?
These fast-emerging platforms are increasingly becoming viable options to traditional "legacy" database systems. To better understand how the challengers are positioning their technologies—and how established database providers are fighting back—I would invite you to join me at Acceleration Economy's digital event, the Cloud Database Battleground, on January 27, 2022.
I will be hosting the Battleground, where we will invite cloud database providers to answer 5 questions—on topics such as scale, speed, multi-cloud, and more—to even the playing field. Please join us by registering here.
Thank you for spending your valuable time with the Cloud Database Report!
