Ignition! Behind the scenes of the fusion energy breakthrough.
The pace of progress toward fusion energy had inched along for decades. Then in August 2021, it sped up.

That's when an experiment at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory resulted in significant burn of the fusion fuel for the first time. It wasn’t more energy out than the laser energy that went in, but now knew they were close. From that moment on, “our experimental and operations teams kicked it into high gear,” says Phil Adams, chief technology officer at NIF.

Over the next year, Adams’ team helped fine-tune experiments that use 192 lasers to recreate the conditions inside stars, and, they believed, achieve controlled fusion ignition. Beyond managing the infrastructure and control systems, Adams’ team captures the data from each high-stakes laser shot. This is the story of how the technologists, scientists, and researchers shaped experiments using one of the world’s most complex and powerful research tools and made fusion energy history in December 2022.
