The digital future of clinical research
"Medical science is progressing at an unprecedented pace,” says Oxford University Regius Professor of Medicine Sir John Bell. The advancements will, he believes, offer new tools that can identify people at risk much earlier, allowing interventions before diseases reach an advanced stage.

In a recent conversation at Oracle Health Sciences Connect, Bell discussed clinical research and its digital future, including the transformative potential of new digital tools for both clinicians and researchers. Bell emphasized the potential of leveraging artificial intelligence for data analysis to revolutionize scientific research, clinical trials, and patient care.

Many of the opportunities hinge on more robust, efficient, and portable digital health records. The secure digitization and aggregation of health information can streamline large-scale studies, reduce costs, and facilitate the recruitment of more diverse populations for study. The goal, he says, is to tackle major population health challenges, such as obesity, which is a major risk factor for diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and a significant percentage of common cancers.
