Baseball, business…and data
“You’re trying to create and retain fans just like we are,” says Bill Schlough, CIO of Major League Baseball’s San Francisco Giants, in a conversation with Sameer Khera. Khera is CIO of Gen, a cybersecurity and software services company with brands such as LifeLock and Norton. Schlough and Khera met up at a Giants spring training game this year and swapped ideas and inspiration around CIO strategy.

How do chief information officers from these two very different businesses help their organizations win? Beyond customer experience, Bill and Sameer discuss how team culture drives talent retention in any business and how they both leverage data to find hidden advantages.

“We track a pitch at every spot along the way to the batter at 60 frames per second,” says Schlough, “and we track the players in the field. You’re tracking the biomechanics and biometrics.” Now, he says, the team is bringing that same data-centric focus to business operations, such as concessions: “How can pricing, promotions, and different products impact behavior?” Gen’s Khera can relate. Gen keeps a close tab on its customers’ experience as people buy, use, and renew security services to fine-tune the best customer experience and “wow them through their entire journey with us.”

And that, both CIOs agree, is how you win. Watch the video to hear the conversation.
