Make the Commitment
When it comes to digital transformation, there's no lack of executive vision. What's lacking is the ability to execute, says Loïc Le Guisquet, Oracle president responsible for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa; Asia Pacific; and Japan. "They can't execute because they're stuck with legacy IT," Le Guisquet says. "There's no point in announcing a big digital transformation if you can't execute it."

The culprit, Le Guisquet believes, is that business leaders have not yet fully committed to the cloud and instead deploy cloud technology only on the fringes of their operations. "They've maybe added lead management or used it to manage their recruitment processes a bit more efficiently. But it hasn't been transformative at all," he says. "That's not bad—it's a good thing—but it is very, very far from what the cloud can bring." Where to begin? Le Guisquet offers five specific tactics for executing real digital transformation.

RadioShack Dials Down Costs
RadioShack Dials Down Costs, Turns Up Innovation
RadioShack expects to reduce operating costs by $4 million during the next three years by shutting down its data center and replacing it with cloud infrastructure and cloud applications for retail and finance functions. "We're not just cutting costs," says RadioShack CFO Gordon Briscoe. "We're also refining our cost structure to make sure the business is set up to spend on innovation." For the holidays, RadioShack rolled out headphones — designed by its chief creative officer, the entertainer Nick Cannon — with ear cups you can flip out to turn it into a speaker. Learn more about the transformation.
Carrefour at Intersection of Personalization and Service
Carrefour, the French supermarket giant, expects to improve productivity by 40 percent and increase customer satisfaction rates with a new service approach that makes it easier for consumers to communicate about their store experience. The effort uses Oracle Service Cloud, which "not only gives us clearer visibility into the issues customers are bringing to us so we can resolve them more quickly and easily but also improves the quality of service we can provide," says Samantha De Freitas, Carrefour's customer service manager. It's a move that fits neatly into Carrefour's omnichannel strategy.
Are Painless Performance Reviews Possible?
Managers and employees dread the annual employee performance review, and 78 percent of the respondents to a Human Capital Institute survey find it ineffective. One way to improve the process: use the latest tech tools that give employees and managers the data to make evaluations relevant and the goal-tracking tools to make them less of a once-a-year event. Get more advice from a human capital advisory expert from Baker Tilly.

How Sherwin-Williams Keeps Putting a Fresh Coat of Paint on a 150-Year-Old Business
At the core of Sherwin-Williams' product and process innovation is technology, especially as cloud computing frees up the company's IT pros to focus on higher-level work. "It used to be that IT ran servers and did backups and some programming, and we put ourselves in a box," says CIO Tom Lucas. "We're not in a box anymore.… The cloud helps us by doing all the basics that are noncompetitive." See what the paint company does with the time it has freed up.
