Creepiness Is Contextual
Employers are tapping new cloud-based tools and data sources to gather information on employees to improve their performance, gauge sentiment, measure engagement, monitor safety, root out misconduct, and raise the bar in other ways. And on the face of it, some of those collection methods and datatypes may seem more "creepy" than others. But before jumping to conclusions, consider the circumstances, advises Dr. Mary Young, principal researcher in the area of human capital management at The Conference Board.

The degree of creepiness depends on several factors, Young says, including whether employees have the right to opt in or opt out, how transparent the employer is about the types of data it's collecting and why, and whether the data being collected is aggregated or personally identifiable. Read more on why creepiness is contextual when it comes to employee-data collection, including the insights of Oracle HR expert Bertrand Dussert.
