The Crown Jewel
When investment analysts asked Oracle Executive Chairman and CTO Larry Ellison questions at the close of Oracle OpenWorld 2016, they focused on Oracle's cloud software, platform, and infrastructure businesses. One question focused on the competition: Why does Oracle talk about Workday as its most important cloud application competitor, when rival Salesforce.com is much bigger?

Ellison's answer: The size of the prize is much bigger for ERP cloud applications, where Workday has an offering and Salesforce doesn't. And Oracle has a more complete ERP suite than Workday, since Oracle offers applications such as manufacturing and supply chain that Workday doesn't. The ERP software-as-a-service opportunity is so big for the same reason that SaaS is so attractive for customers: The customer does less work, and the provider does more. "You're not just buying a software license. You're buying software plus storage, plus a network, plus servers, plus service," Ellison said. "Of course, it's much larger. The customer is getting much more." Read more of Ellison's insights on ERP cloud here.

CERN Tests Data Exploration Using Big Data, Analytics, And The Cloud
As scientists probe the inner workings of the universe at CERN, the world-famous particle physics laboratory will require more computing power and storage capacity than its data centers—and budget—can currently handle. In addition to managing its own on-site data centers, CERN's Alberto Di Meglio believes the lab can efficiently procure computing and storage services as-needed via the cloud. "The cloud is becoming an increasingly important component of our research infrastructure," he says. Learn more about how cloud fits with this complex operation.
