Hurd: How Simplicity Accelerates Efficiency
Gone should be the days when the burden falls on IT departments to undertake the arduous task of cobbling together various applications—"piece parts," in the words of Oracle CEO Mark Hurd—into a functioning system a business can rely on. Today's cloud-based technology can offer more than the well-understood benefits of shifting the financial burden of maintaining applications and hardware and delivering much-more-rapid software innovation. If companies choose a cloud suite, Hurd said recently, they also get a new level of efficiency that comes with simplicity.

Hurd said companies will hold onto their on-premises, customized applications only when they represent a true competitive differentiator. As the rest of applications move to the cloud, "suites will win," Hurd said during a keynote presentation at Oracle Industry Connect. His reasoning: "I don't think we'll return to the complexity we've created in the past."
